C.H.I.L.D! Present project with local orphanage is in endanger of being closed down until the alert is suspended.
Kevin Cope, co-founder of C.H.I.L.D!, said “I visited an orphanage today 2nd September, Kevin and C.H.I.L.D! voluntary translators were asked to wash their hands and had a temperature test before they were even allowed to sit down with the administrators”.
Kevin asked what had transpired since his last visit, and was concerned by the response that the current project may be closed down due to the extension of the swine flu alert. Kevin responded that he was aware that H1N1 influenza (swine flu) is present in South Korea, though the severity appears to be relatively mild and is, in fact, comparable to the seasonal influenza that occurs with significant effect every winter, for which medical intervention is usually not necessary. He questioned the intention of temperature checks and how they would be able to distinguish between a specific case of the regular seasonal flu and H1N1. The orphanage was surprised to learn that the treatment was the same for both.
He was met with confused looks and the translator refused to translate all due to status issues. Luckily the conversation changed and the orphanage suggested that the current project, may have to be suspended due the government H1N1 influenza alert. Kevin asked "If the children who are currently going to school are actually having checks done at the schools, if so what checks were being done at present?", to which there is no information that the public schools are checking their students for symptoms.
The Korean administrators at the orphanage feel they are working hard to protect the children with the checks and to help stop the current project from being shut down, to Kevin's relief, until they understand the facts and not react irrationally to the current atmosphere of panic. The project will currently stand and run until more information is obtained.
